He currently leads a thriving independent insurance firm and at one time was the busiest agent in North Carolina for a major insurance carrier, whose firm was one of the largest in the country. Prior to his work in the insurance industry, Don served in the US Army, active duty for more than four years, with service as a Vietnam helicopter pilot for more than two years. He attained the rank of Captain at the age of 22, and among other awards, he received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Bronze Star, 35 Air Medals, Army Commendation Medal and a Purple Heart. After being wounded in Vietnam he returned to Wilmington and started a State Farm agency. Don has lived in the Wilmington area now for over 50 years and in addition to taking care of his clientele he also has been involved in many charitable organizations. Among his favorites are Habitat For Humanity, Cape Fear Literacy Council, the Kiwanis and Sertoma Club -- a community service organization focused on "service to mankind."
